Manchester United keen on agreeing terms with Spanish attacker

Manchester United are reportedly keen to kickstart contract talks with midfielder Juan Mata with his existing deal concluding at the end of the ongoing campaign. The Spaniard has not been an ever-present in terms of Premier League football but he has still been a valuable squad player Jose Mourinho has admired.

According to The Sun, the club’s hierarchy are keen to begin discussions over a new deal with the Spaniard as they are fearful that they could lose him for nothing at the end of the season. At present, Mata is free to negotiate a pre-contract with an overseas club in the New Year but United are keen to avoid such a situation by finalising an agreement with his father and representative in the forthcoming months.

Mata was widely fancied to make way from the Old Trafford outfit after his shrewd relationship with manager Jose Mourinho during their time together at Chelsea but this has not happened with the Portuguese tactician regularly banking on the Spaniard’s services when in need.

Nonetheless, Mata has been able to replicate the form from his prime at Chelsea but he nonetheless remains a valuable player with his distribution and set-piece taking abilities being among his key strengths. Mata has contributed a goal and an assist during the ongoing campaign and the former came during the epic 3-2 win over Newcastle United where he scored with a sublime free-kick to spark the comeback from two goals down.
