Chelsea may have to do without a key defender in Antonio Rudiger when they entertain Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon. The Germany international picked up a groin problem during the backend of the 3-0 win over Southampton before the international and it is now suggested that he could miss the crunch lunchtime showdown altogether.
According to BBC Sport, the versatile defender remains a doubt for the encounter and his involvement may depend on a late fitness test. Should he remain unavailable, club-captain Gary Cahill is likely to slot into the central defence alongside David Luiz and the match would witness the first occasion whereby Maurizio Sarri has decided to tinker with the defensive combination this term.
The Blues have performed above the initial expectations under the new head coach but they face a tricky test against the Red Devils. Jose Mourinho’s side may have not stated the season in the best of form but they will be determined to not lose the upcoming encounter which may encourage the manager to go with a defensive-minded approach.
Chelsea are currently positioned 2nd on the Premier League table and they are currently trailing leaders Manchester City on only goal difference. Manchester United, on the other hand, are lying down in the eighth spot with a seven-point gap between them and the top of the standings.
