Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes both Chelsea and his former club will make the top-four of the Premier League ahead of Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City.
The Red Devils are currently the in-form team with a 19-game unbeaten run since February. On the other hand, the Blues have been picking up regular wins, but they have suffered some disappointing losses against the likes of West Ham United and Sheffield United.
Despite this, the Blues have a slender one-point advantage over both Leicester City and Manchester United in the race for the top-four positions and Ferdinand feels the west London side should finish in the Champions League places.
Frank Lampard’s side have a difficult schedule with Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers to face, but they have a genuine chance of beating the former, who seem to have dropped their performance levels since being crowned as the new league champions.
Speaking to BT Sport, via M.E.N, Ferdinand said: “Yeah I agree. I looked at it at first and thought Liverpool and Wolves, which are Chelsea’s games, they’re going to struggle.
“But I think Chelsea will beat Wolves last day of the season, something to play for. And then I think that West Ham will do Man United a favour.
“Obviously with Chelsea they’ve got such tough fixtures, but with United and Leicester playing each other on the last day, I think Chelsea are going to get in.“
When compared to the Blues, Leicester have an equally tough schedule with Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in their remaining games of the season. The latter of those games will definitely see one side dropping points.
The Blues need to ensure that they pick up at least four points from their remaining matches, considering anything less than that could see leapfrogged by both Leicester and United on goal difference.
Such a circumstance would depend on the Foxes and Red Devils playing out a draw on the final matchday and Lampard will be aiming to avoid such a situation without expecting a favour from one of those teams.
