Fresh update on Manchester United’s chances of signing €36m defender

Manchester United have reportedly received a potential blow in their pursuit of Kostas Manolas with the player’s release clause unlikely to be active until after the January transfer window.

A recent report indicated that United could trigger the €36m escape clause in the defender’s contract in January with the hierarchy aiming to bolster the heart of the backline.

However, according to Calciomercato, that does not appear likely anymore with his clause only activating following the winter period and United are instead keen on landing a summer move for the Greece international.

Still, United are being fancied to pursue at least one central defender this month and Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic has been earmarked as the prime option for the transfer window.

The Serbian was closely watched by ex-United boss Jose Mourinho as well as United scouts earlier in the season and it appears that the board are prepared to follow up with contact already made with the Serie A side.
