Italian club confirm Manchester United bid for 21-year-old centre-back

Fiorentina’s chief executive Pantaleo Corvino has indicated that the Serie A club have already turned down an approach from Manchester United to sign defender Nikola Milenkovic.

The Serbian has been on United’s radar since the close of the summer transfer window and ex-boss Jose Mourinho had personally scouted the centre-back during one of the international breaks.

Since then, there has regularly been the speculation linking the Serbian with United and La Viola’s chief has now revealed that they have knocked back advances from United for their player.

“We rejected great offers from Lyon for [Jordan] Veretout, from Marseille for [Giovani] Simeone and from Manchester United for Nikola Milenkovic,” he said.

United had been tipped to pursue a central defender amid their shambles during the first half of the season but that has been partly sorted with the appointment of interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

As such, it appears that the hierarchy are not desperate to pursue a central defender during the month and they may wait until the summer before coming up with a fresh approach for Milenkovic.

Among the current central defenders, Marcos Rojo appears the likelier player to make way during the summer, although the future of Phil Jones remains a concern with his contract expiring in five months’ time.
