Former Chelsea star Joe Cole has urged manager Frank Lampard to drop Timo Werner to the bench in the near future as the forward needs to brush up on his finishing.
The Germany international has been a good signing for the Blues with eight goals and five assists from just 20 outings, but of late, he has struggled with his finishing as well as his distribution.
The 24-year-old has played as a main striker for most of his career, but he has had to adapt to the left-wing position at the Blues with Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham preferred for the striker’s role.
He had a game to forget against Wolves where he conceded possession countless number of times with his poor distribution in the final third and Lampard was visibly frustrated over the same.
Speaking after the game, Cole said that Lampard should consider dropping Werner to the bench once Hakim Ziyech and Callum Hudson-Odoi are available for selection after their respective injuries.
“I just think he just needs to brush up on his finishing, but he’s a young striker and he will do that. So I’ve got no doubts he’ll be a top player for Chelsea,” He told via Amazon Prime Video.
“However, there are options now and he [Lampard] needs to move it around. Ziyech and Hudson-Odoi to come back in, freshen it up at some point. Take Werner out, bring him back in.”
With successive defeats, the Blues have failed to break into the top four. They are fifth on the table and could drop to as low as eighth by tomorrow.
They will host West Ham United in the next matchday. The game could be tricky for them, having beaten the Hammers on just one of the previous six meetings.
