Manchester United have reportedly joined Manchester City in the pursuit of highly-rated Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt this summer.
The Dutchman has been heavily touted to join Barcelona during the forthcoming transfer window, but it appears that he is not entirely convinced with the sporting project presented by the Blaugrana.
As such, the Ajax captain seems open to pursuing another challenge and Sport Witness via Mundo Deportivo reports that the Mancunian clubs could find themselves in a bidding battle for the youngster.
United’s defensive concerns have been well documented and they conceded more than 50 goals for the first time in the Premier League era in the recently-concluded campaign.
Based on this, De Ligt would surely prove a significant improvement on their existing options, but City could hamper their plans with a big-money move of their own and the assurance of Champions League football.
The Citizens are currently the future of Nicolas Otamendi and Vincent Kompany ahead of the summer, and though the latter is likely to stay, they seem to be planning for the long-term.
Aside from the duo, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have also been touted as possible destinations for the Dutch champion, but Barcelona may still hold the edge, should they present a better economical offer to the Dutchman.
