Jose Mourinho provides key transfer update regarding new arrivals

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has admitted that the club may recruit one more player before the transfer window concludes next month. United made a strong start to the summer with the likes of Fred and Diogo Dalot brought into the squad but they have since pursued just a solitary signing in the form of Lee Grant, who is expected the assume the role of the third-choice goalkeeper.

In a report covered by BBC Sport, Mourinho confirmed that he would have liked to sign two players from the five-man shortlist submitted to Ed Woodward few months ago but at the moment, he may settle for a single recruit before the transfer deadline approaches on August 9.

The central defence has been a key position of focus in recent weeks for United and this has witnessed them being linked with Leicester City’s Harry Maguire for whom they have already made a formal approach. Besides him, United are also understood to hold an interest in Spurs’ Toby Alderweireld, although the final transfer value remains a concern in signing either player.

Aside from the pair, United have had tentative links with Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane, Bayern’s Jerome Boateng and Milan Skriniar from Inter Milan but they remain outsiders for the moment to strengthen the heart of the United backline. Based on this desperation, reports have emerged that United have contacted Barcelona regarding a possible deal for Yerry Mina, who impressed for Colombia at the World Cup.
