Chelsea will make a fresh attempt to sign Jules Kounde from Sevilla in the next few days, as per Fabrizio Romano.
The Blues started their campaign with a 3-0 win over Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge.
Trevoh Chalobah was the pick of the players on debut as he scored a stunning long-range goal.
The young centre-back has made a huge impression on Thomas Tuchel since pre-season.
Despite this, the Blues are pursuing Kounde with Kurt Zouma tipped to leave the club soon.
Zouma was proposed in a part-exchange deal for Kounde last month, but there was no breakthrough.
It has also been reported that Zouma would prefer to stay in London in the prime of his career.
West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur are considering late moves for his services.
Kounde has a €80m release clause on his contract, and Sevilla want a fee close to the figure.
The deal could potentially go down to the wire with the Blues aiming to recoup funds first.
They recently sold Tammy Abraham to Roma for €40m. Zouma could be the next through the exit door.
