Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has been deemed to have suffered a long-term knee injury after he was excluded from the matchday squad for the Gunners’ embarrassing 5-1 Premier League defeat at Liverpool.
The ex-Germany international has been in-and-out of the Gunners matchday squads since the start of November and this has restricted him to just two league starts.
Amidst this, it appears that the midfielder may have suffered an injury setback with Turkish outlet Fanatik claiming that the attacker could be out for a ‘long time’.
Ozil has endured a rather mixed relationship with Emery over the course of the current campaign and reports have recently emerged that the manager would not intervene, should the German push for a winter exit.
However, the current injury may potential scupper his chances of doing so while the Gunners could also be forced to pursue another recruit with the injuries which have affected the attack front.
Arsenal are already without Danny Welbeck for the season and Henrikh Mkhitaryan for the next five weeks and Ozil’s absence may potentially leave Emery with barely any rotation available within the first-team squad.
The north London giants have not enjoyed the best of festive periods and they are currently two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea after playing an extra game more.
Their recent league meeting against Liverpool ended in a disappointing 5-1 defeat despite them opening the scoresheet. Roberto Firmino starred for the Reds with his maiden league hat-trick.
