Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes Chelsea’s expectations have gone up following a strong second half performance against Liverpool during the recent Premier League clash.
The Blues suffered a second defeat on the bounce as the Reds picked up a 2-1 triumph but their second half performance was hugely impressive as they made Jurgen Klopp’s side to cling onto a slender advantage.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson has been impressed with the progress made by the Blues under Lampard and feels that they should push for the top four this season on the basis of the weekend performance.
“I think expectations have gone up now. After that performance, you’re looking at top four. When you see what’s around, you’re looking at top four. With losing the game, it’s backfired in a way – the expectations have gone up rather than down. I’ve seen enough yesterday to say they’ll be in the mix,” he was quoted as saying by Metro.
Chelsea’s main setback has been the defence this term and they have already conceded 14 goals from the opening six league games without picking up a single clean sheet.
It was anticipated that the return of Antonio Rudiger could sort the concern but the Germany international has recently suffered a fresh groin problem which has kept him out of action.
To add to the misery, both Andreas Christensen and Emerson suffered injury setbacks against Liverpool over the weekend and that does not instil any confidence, considering the duo are regarded as key players under Lampard.
