Chelsea have reportedly received a boost in the pursuit of a new centre-back with Bayern Munich’s Mat Hummels apparently up for sale when the transfer window reopens.
The German has racked nearly 100 appearances for the German champions since joining from Borussia Dortmund two years ago but his place has come under question this term after starting just half of the club’s Bundesliga matches.
According to The Sun, a member from the Blues’ hierarchy is understood to have approached for the former World Cup winner and Bayern have given the go-ahead to push through a mid-season deal.
The Bundesliga holders are understood to demand at least £30m for the former Dortmund man while they are keen on finalising any deal before mid-January in order to find themselves a replacement.
The move for Hummels may potentially raise doubts over the future of Gary Cahill, who has been fancied to make a move across London to join the Gunners with his contract expiring in six months’ time.
Meanwhile, David Luiz is in a similar position with the Blues in terms of his contract but Maurizio Sarri remains hopeful that the club reward the Brazilian with a multi-year contract despite him being on the wrong side of his 30s.
