Spain international Marcos Alonso has confirmed that he is in ‘very advanced’ talks with Chelsea regarding a new long-term contract. The 27-year-old still has nearly three years remaining on his existing deal but the Blues are said to be keen to committing him to a new contract amid interest from ex-club Real Madrid.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with AS via Sport, Alonso confirmed that the Blues’ hierarchy want him to stay put for the long-term. He added that the discussions are presently at a very advanced stage and he could sign a new contract before the end of the current month.
Alonso made the deadline-day move to Chelsea from Fiorentina during the summer of 2016 and his transfer had posed plenty of question marks, given his struggles to make an impression with Bolton Wanderers and Sunderland previously in the Premier League.
However, he has adjusted tremendously on his return to the English top-flight and he has been the leading goalscoring full-back in Europe’s top-five leagues over the past two-and-a-half years, where he has contributed 15 goals.
His form has also helped him make the jump to the Spain national team and he has been a regular for La Roja since the current season began with three starts. Alonso is expected to feature for Chelsea when they entertain Manchester United in tomorrow’s early Premier League kick-off at Stamford Bridge.
