Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel was asked to rate the club’s chances of winning the Premier League following the 3-0 win over Crystal Palace in the curtain raiser.
The Blues recently won the UEFA Super Cup against Villarreal, and carried the momentum into the derby with a convincing victory over Patrick Vieira’s side.
Following the game, Tuchel was asked about the club’s prospects of competing for the title, but the German dismissed the chances citing they are not favourites.
He said: “I see ourselves as number four last year so we cannot be favourites. We just have to close the gap to number three, number two and number one so this is what we’re trying to do.”
“I think we have to hunt the others from day one. This is what we want to do, this is our mentality and we are never shy to fight for the best outcome possible but the reality is we are not the favourites right now.”
The Blues scraped into the top four last term due to average finishing. They should perform better this time around with Romelu Lukaku expected to bag regular goals.
Lukaku recently made his comeback to the club from Inter Milan on a club-record fee, but he was unavailable to face the Eagles in the season opener due to quarantine.
He is likely to link up with his teammates for training on Monday or Tuesday. He could make his debut against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium next weekend.
The Blues are currently second on the table after the first matchday. They have a tough schedule ahead. The club face Arsenal and Liverpool before the international break.
