Manchester United have confirmed five players will miss the weekend Premier League clash against Southampton at St Mary’s.
Both Luke Shaw (hamstring) and Anthony Martial (thigh) picked up injuries in the recent defeat to Crystal Palace, and it appears that they could be sidelined for a considerable period of time.
While Shaw could be out of action for at least a month with the muscular problem, there has been no timescale placed on Martial, who has been in fine form with two goals and an assist this term.
In an update provided by United’s website, it is confirmed that both Shaw and Martial will take no part in the forthcoming league encounter against the Saints on the road.
Elsewhere, Diogo Dalot is out until after the international break with a muscle injury while Eric Bailly and Timothy Fosu-Mensah are long-term absentees.
With Shaw unavailable, Ashley Young seems destined to perform the left-back duties as well as taking over the captain’s armband from goalkeeper David de Gea.
Marcus Rashford, meanwhile, should lead the line in Martial’s absence and it will be interesting to see whether Mason Greenwood is handed with a starting chance after three appearances off the bench totaling less than 40 minutes.
