Chelsea have reportedly agreed on a £40m sum with Real Madrid for the permanent signing of midfielder Mateo Kovacic.
The Croatian spent the previous campaign on loan with the Blues from Los Blancos where he made 51 appearances across all competitions.
According to BBC Sport, the Blues have agreed to pay a fee of around £40m in order to secure the permanent signature of the 25-year-old.
The west London giants are currently restricted from registering new players due to a year-long transfer ban but that case does not lie with Kovacic, who is already contracted to the club.
However, the temporary deal is due to expire at the end of the ongoing month and the Blues must officially announce the deal by then to avoid any potential setback.
Kovacic, who is a three-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid, had been a regular choice in a midfield three during the backend of the previous campaign.
That formation could change with the expected arrival of Frank Lampard at the helm, but it appears that the club have received the green light from the 40-year-old to seal the deal.
