A section of the Chelsea fans believe Mason Mount could be handed with his competitive debut when the Blues make the trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on August 11.
Mount has been in impressive form for the Blues during pre-season and he continued the run against Reading, where he scored a second-half brace in a 4-3 friendly win at the Madejski Stadium.
Both goals did result from defensive mistakes from the opposition, but Mount’s awareness was impressive for the opening strike where he had a single touch at the edge of the box before finding the net with a superb finish.
Here are some of the Twitter reactions over the performance…
Mount has gained valuable first-team experience in loan stints at Vitesse Arnhem and Derby County in the past two seasons and it appears that he will finally make the breakthrough at the west London giants.
In the current pre-season, he has been the club’s top goalgetter with three goals and it remains to be seen whether Frank Lampard hands him the number 10 role for the league opener against United.
Mount faces direct competition from a rejuvenated Ross Barkley, who has scored in successive pre-season games and Lampard has a selection headache on his hands for the curtain raiser in two weeks’ time.
