ESPN pundit Steve Nicol has said that Manchester United have a good chance of signing Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax this summer, should the Dutchman focus his attention on the salary package.
The Dutchman has been widely fancied to part ways with the Amsterdam outfit at the end of the season and United have been earmarked as one of the many sides, who are tracking his progress.
Speaking on ESPN FC, Nicol said that United are currently not in a good position to pursue the young centre-back, given they cannot assure him of Champions League football next season.
However, they could have an advantage in luring him, should the Dutchman eventually decide to join a club, where he would be rewarded with a bumper salary package.
Nicol said: “This depends on De Ligt, whether he’s interested in the money or no. If his goal is football, he’s one of those smart guys that understands regardless of where you go you’re still going to get a lot of money. If he’s a guy who just wants to take the most that’s available, then there’s a good chance he could go to United.”
De Ligt opened the scoring in both legs of the club’s Champions League semi-final ties against Tottenham Hotspur but the latter won by the away goal rule in dramatic circumstances.
Lucas Moura was the standout performer for the north London outfit with a hat-trick which was scored during the second half of the reverse leg in Amsterdam with Spurs being three goals down.
