Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly aiming to bolster the club’s midfield during the summer amid Michael Carrick’s retirement and Marouane Fellaini’s uncertain future at Old Trafford.
According to The Mail, the Portuguese tactician has already stepped up to bolster the central midfield with Shakhtar Donestsk’s Fred and Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic earmarked as prime candidates to reinforce the department.
As per the report, the Red Devils are said to be making progress over a move for Fred, who is likely to cost a fee of around £50m from the Ukrainian giants. The Brazilian is supposedly said to favour a move to Manchester and Jose Mourinho’s side are leading the race with Manchester City no longer interested.
On the other hand, the Mancunian giants are also making strides towards the signing of Milinkovic-Savic from Lazio with The Mail suggesting that the Serbian could cost in upwards of £80m. The Serbian is widely regarded as a box-to-box midfielder and his contribution further up the field has been impressive this term.
Manchester United are currently second in the Premier League standings with 77 points but they are yet to be assured of the runner-up spot following their defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion. Pascal Gross scored the only in Brighton’s maiden Premier League triumph over United.
