Arsenal are reportedly in advanced negotiations with Borussia Dortmund as they seek to pursue the signature of Sokratis Papastathopoulos. The Greek international has been with the Bundesliga outfit since the summer of 2013 but he is now eyeing a fresh challenge in an attempt to win more trophies.
According to Gianluca di Marzio, the north London club are pressing ahead in their attempt to sign Sokratis despite the fact that they are yet to recruit a new head coach. It is added that talks are an advanced stage between the sides and the deal is ‘very close’ to being finalised.
Sokratis’ current deal with Dortmund expires at the end of next season and the German outfit are likely to lean towards his sale, considering he has been reluctant to extend his contract. A fee of around £17.5m is expected to be sufficient to push through a summer agreement, though Arsenal can anticipate some late transfer interest.
As per previous reports, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is also understood to be interested in signing the Greek centre-back and there could be a potential transfer tussle, should the FA Cup finalists step up their interest.
