Premier League holders Chelsea are prepared to pay a world-record fee for a defender in order to pursue Alex Sandro from Juventus this summer. The Brazil international has evolved into a key contributor for the Old Lady in recent seasons, and his play is often compared to country great Roberto Carlos.
According to Calciomercato, the Blues could be prepared to offer as much as €70m as they seek to persuade Juventus into a potential sale. Antonio Conte’s side have already failed with two bids worth €52m and €56m for the left-sided defender, and they are willing to offer the first priority on Nemanja Matic in order to ease their pursuit.
Matic has been strongly linked with a £50m switch to Manchester United in recent days, but Conte would rather prefer the midfielder ply his trade overseas with Juventus a potential option. The Old Lady are also reluctant to match Matic’s valuation, but the Blues will seek to compromise a lesser fee, should they give the green light for Sandro’s switch to Stamford Bridge.
Conte has managed to bring in Antonio Rudiger, who could provide the much-needed depth in the central defensive and right wing-back department, and the Italian now sees Sandro as the perfect fit for the left wing-back role with Marcos Alonso probably to act as his deputy.
Sandro has yet to extend his Juventus contract beyond 2019, and there is a definite possibility that he could switch clubs considering the fresh interest from Chelsea – after missing out on Danilo to Manchester City.
