Manchester United have reportedly been given the green signal to sign Atletico Madrid centre-back Jose Gimenez in the next transfer window.
The Uruguayan international had been on Jose Mourinho’s radar during the start of the campaign while there were thoughts over a potential move in the winter as well.
Gimenez, 22, has largely struggled to firm a regular starting role at Atleti, and he is prepared to move on with his existing deal due to expire in a year’s time.
According to Mundo Deportivo, United will be offered a free route to the central defender, should they agree to match his £56m release clause.
Gimenez is regarded as one of the most promising in European football, and though his passing game needs to improve, he still has a steely resolve in the backline.
Mourinho has used the likes of Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling at the heart of the defence this term, but the 54-year-old will nevertheless prefer the arrival of Gimenez, who could turn out to be a long-term player at Old Trafford.
Gimenez has played second fiddle to both Stefan Savic and Diego Godin in central defence this campaign, and Diego Simeone would prefer to offload the defender with a young Lucas Hernandez present in the ranks to provide backup.
