Everton have reportedly held initial contact with AS Roma over a winter deal for defender Kostas Manolas. The Greece international is widely regarded as one of the best centre-backs plying their trade in Europe.
According to Sky Italia, the Toffees have stepped up their chase ahead of their rivals with manager Ronald Koeman keen to strengthen his backline in the transfer window.
The 25-year-old has made a name for himself since his World Cup display in 2014, and his availability is something Koeman would favour as he seeks to add more steel to the heart of the defence.
Captain Phil Jagielka has been warming the substitutes’ in recent outings, and the Dutchman could offload the veteran when his contract expires in the summer.
Roma currently value their asset at around £32.5m which would be a club-record sum for Everton, but there is still a possibility of a player swap with English midfielder Ross Barkley going the other direction.
