Arsenal head coach Arsene Wenger has confirmed that midfielder Mohamed Elneny will link up with Egypt for the 2017 edition of the African Cup of Nations.
The 24-year-old has been picked for the prestigious tournament and will travel with the Pharaohs squad shortly after the game against Crystal Palace on New Year’s Day.
“He’s going to the Africa Cup of Nations on January 2,” Wenger said on Thursday. “He will be in the squad against Crystal Palace on New Year’s Day but after he will leave us to play for Egypt.”
Seven-time winners Egypt will have a testing campaign in AFCON as they take on Mali, Ghana, and newcomers Uganda between January 17 and 25. Should the Pharaohs progress further into the finals, the Gunners could be without Elneny until February 5.
The former Basel star has not had a prominent role in the Gunners team this season, but he still remains crucial with Aaron Ramsey being the only other backup option to Granit Xhaka and Francis Coquelin in central midfield.
