Manchester United great Peter Schmeichel believes the Red Devils should cough up a hefty sum to sign West Ham United playmaker Dimitri Payet in the New Year. The France international has looked off-colour for most of the season, but he still remains in high regard among the top clubs in Europe.
While speaking on British talk show Soccer AM (Via The Star), the former Red Devils goalkeeper insisted that Payet could be the game changer, should he arrive at Old Trafford in January.
The midfielder will be available for just £15m in the summer if the Hammers are demoted, but Schmeichel feels United should take the risk with the player in the winter transfer window.
“[Payet’s] a Manchester United-type player for sure. I think Mourinho has to change his way a little bit to please the fans, the club and traditions of the club,” he said.
“I think he is showing signs of that, the players that he is signing, they are of a different calibre.
“Zlatan Ibrahimovic is someone he probably wouldn’t have signed had he been at Chelsea, but he’s United’s kind of player, the kind the supporters like to see. He’s rewarding us with great skills and great goals – I think he has scored seven goals so far.
“But Payet? Definitely, if he can find the form he showed during the Euros.”
The 29-year-old may not be getting any younger, but he still possesses a lot of tricks in his armoury, which could pronounce him as a key player for the Mancunian giants.
Payet, who was previously on Jose Mourinho’s radar in the summer, is valued at around £35m.
